NCHE – Take Action!

NCHE meets regularly with NEA’s lobbying and policy staff to consult on federal issues of importance to higher education.  To urge Congress to move in the right direction, we must raise our voices on issues that matter to our profession, our students, our organization, and our nation.

NEA maintains an action center on current issues, focusing on a wide range of federal initiatives that can have impact on each of us.  The general page links to education-specific issues and other critical areas of focus like workers’ rights, health care, individual rights and freedoms, and retirement security.  There you can access priority bills in Congress that NEA supports as well as action alerts to communicate with your member of Congress.  This general page is found here: NEA Federal Legislation Issues and Action

The page from above will also lead you to links that focus specifically on higher education and career and technical education legislation.  Separate links are provided here for ease of access to the critical and time-sensitive information.

NEA Foundation Supports NCHE and NEA Higher Educators

The NEA Foundation provides critical support to higher education.  For example:

  • NCHE recently created an annual Higher Educator of the Year Award.  To NCHE’s surprise and jubilation, the  NEA Foundation is supporting this effort with a monetary award of $10,000 for the winner, equal to that of its support for the annual NEA ESP Award.
  • The Foundation awards grants three times each year to NEA members to support both classroom innovation and professional development – and in each round, some of those grantees are higher education members.  In the very competitive fall 2018 round, the Foundation awarded support for a team featuring faculty and staff from a higher education institution.

GPS Fund Grants

NEA’s Great Public Schools (GPS) Fund enables grant awardees to improve student success. Since 2013, the GPS Fund has provided funds to state affiliates, local affiliates, and partnerships that demonstrate leadership in enhancing the quality of public education and engaging members. Award criteria focus on ensuring successful students, accomplished professionals, dynamic collaboration, and empowering leaders. Go here to learn more about the grants already awarded, about guidelines and deadlines, and about the application process.

edCommunities, NEA’s online professional learning and engagement community, hosts many private and public discussion groups. To connect with groups of educators, school support professionals, and other colleagues about how NEA’s GPS Fund Grants can work for you, first go here to become a member then enter key word Grants in the search function and join the “NEA Grants 4 Great Public Schools” group.
