Common Core Standards
The Common Core Standards for College and Career Readiness has been released. It includes standards for English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12.
Information about the project, its rationale, and next steps can be found on the Common Core Standards Initiative Web site.
NEA joined the partnership developing the standards to insure that the concerns and voices of teachers were considered. And that happened. The project staff met with groups of mathematics and English language arts teachers who were NEA members and National Board Certified. They listened carefully to NEA members and incorporated many of their suggestions into the standards.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a joint effort by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in partnership with Achieve, ACT, and the College Board. Governors and state commissioners of education from across the country committed to joining a state-led process to develop a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12.
